Okay, so aside from being one of the most sticky, sweaty, mosquitoey places ever (I swear, the place was 100% humidity) it was also one of the most beautiful. We stayed at a lodge 140km from Iquitos, the main "city." I really did not like Iquitos. There is nothing to do except sweat and watch, hear and smell the thousands of mototaxis. Anyways, our lodge on one of the contributors to the Amazon looked like this...
The Muyuna lodge has no electricity, and you can't walk on the ground, because it's covered in about 2-5 feet of water, and I wouldn't risk it, because you never know what's in there. On our five days on the Amazon, we went fishing for piranhas, Cayman hunting, night canoeing, day canoeing, swimming with pink dolphins, a trip to the local village, and a jungle walk.
This is us catching piranhas. You have to hit the water with a stick to imitate a drowning animal, and then let the stick with a hook on it drop in to the water. They are really scary. I caught two.
This is a one year old cayman that our guide scooped out of the water. This is a baby boa constrictor. We saw these things on our night boat ride. The cayman kept squirming and it was really hard to hold on to. We released it again after.
The Amazon is definitely not a place for neat-freaks. After the first hour there, your clothes smell like mildew, you are sweating like a pig, showers are cold and only provide temporary relief from heat, tarantulas on the walkway, bog water in your wellies, and dirt on everything.
