As many of you know, Byron Bay was one of our favorite spots on our previous trip to Australia and so we were drawn back here again. And after driving for 2 long days (some 1400km) from Mildura to get here, we were happy to park the campervan for 8 days and relax. One of the things we loved about it here last time was the fact that the caravan park is right on the foreshore, and our site had a view of the beach. Every day it was just a walk down the steps to a beautiful beach, and a 50m walk into town for fabulous coffee (discovered ‘The Wall’ for coffee – it rivals Pure Vanilla, girls!), bakery (although we were very disappointed to find that the Byron Bay Organic Donut shop closed down – thankfully we found them at the Mullumbimby market one Saturday), supermarket, surf shops, pub, and every other shop you need. It’s definitely a surfer, hippie, backpacker place and Lia asked, “Do you feel old?” as we walked down the street one day noting the average age was about mid-20’s. Nope. So went our days… time on the beach, walk into town to get food for the day, drinks at the pub, and bbq for dinner. Life is good. I got back into the groove of running here, there was a nice trail along the beach up to a beautiful vista where you get a glimpse of the early morning surfers catching the pristine waves. Lia picked up her love of surfing again, and we spent the first day seeking out a board for her. We found a used one she thought would be perfect so she spent her hard-earned money she made at the Campus View Christmas Craft Fair, and she spent the better part of every day on her board. She got pretty good! Kali also discovered the fun of surfing, so hours were spent catching waves on the surfboard and boogie board at Byron Bay. We checked out the local markets, enjoying the local mangoes and lime cordial. We had a visitor here too, Adriane, our neighbor from Victoria was travelling and spent a couple of days hanging out with us – was fun to have her. But, all good things must come to an end. The rains started in Byron, and when it rains, it pounds big drops. Somehow that made it easier to leave. Until next time…
