While it is claimed to be the world's most isolated capital city, I think Perth has to be one of the world's most beautiful cities. While the population is about 1.5 million, it has the charm of a smaller city, with all the cosmopolitan feel of a big city. Fremantle is the port city, with gorgeous old architecture, funky shops, restaurants, pubs, and coffee shops. Perth is found about 8 km up the Swan River from the river mouth. The Swan River meanders in, narrow in some parts and wide as a small lake at other parts, and all along the river front is endless green space for public use. Beautiful homes and park space are found all along the river. With this, there is never a shortage of different spaces to explore and use - the white sand beaches of the Indian Ocean in some suburbs, and the river frontage to stroll along. We spent a day wandering around the shops and market at Fremantle - home of the jail that housed the convicts sent to Australia from England. We spent an afternoon wandering the outdoor 'malls' in the city which still has the beautiful old Post Office and Bank of Australia buildings. We visited Luci at her swim training one morning at the high school she will be attending - every high school has their own pool! Lia joined in on a practice one morning - and found out this is a serious school swim team! And with tennis courts up the street (Canada vs Australia in the 2014 Australia Open, revisited), and a pool in their backyard, the girls had loads of fun together. With such beautiful surroundings, a wonderful standard of living, it is so easy to see why the Marsh family loves it here. We have really enjoyed our time in this scenic city - and have been so fortunate to have had the incredible generosity of our wonderful friends - Erika, John, Luci and Bella - who have shared with us and showed us their home and city. We are so grateful to them, and will miss them dearly when we go. A thousand Thank-You's Marsh family for your warm and endless hospitality - we will never forget it. xo
