After our trek around the Eyre Peninsula, we headed east across the top of South Australia and stopped at a small caravan park in Crystal Brooke, at the base of the Flinders Range. What a delightful find. With only about 20 caravan spots, along a little creek (dry when we were there) lined with River Red Gum trees, we relished in the country feel of this historic little town. We woke to the sound of the kookaburra laugh. Because the towns in this area are historic – lots of mining in the past - their homes and buildings have heritage status so are extremely well kept. Many of the homes are original turn of the century homes – one story brick with verandahs – simply gorgeous. Walking down main street felt like we were had gone back in time. It was just delightful. I could have spent more time exploring the area (and the wineries of the Clare Valley). We continued east along the Murray Riverlands – the lifeline of this area in the days when goods were shipped by boat. Now, houseboats meander along the river from town to town, visiting the regions wineries and orchards (something to look forward to another trip), and enjoy other water sports. We spent a night at a lovely caravan park in Mildura right on the river where large gum trees hang over the river making for a peaceful picture.
