Byron Bay is a little surf town with a lot of hippies and surfers on the east coast off what continent again? Oh that big hot one, right. Yes, so anyways, we stayed at the campervan park and stayed in (gasp) our camper. I’ll try to paint a picture… It’s NOT a pop-up, so it’s like a sort of rounded addition on top of a van. Me and Kali sleep up there with about half a foot of space between our faces and the fluffy ceiling, so as you can imagine, getting myself up there and A) going to sleep, B) taking the smoke alarm down every time we use our defective toaster, or C) putting the bed away has given me a fair amount of bruises. Also, it’s super hot up there because there is almost no air circulation unless wind actually gets through the bug screens, which is not common, so I punch the nearest thing close to me to take out my heat-induced anger, either the ceiling or Kali, who is usually a good half a foot and a centimeter away, so usually she gets away. Me and Kali’s seats turn into a bed for my parents, and our mini fridge, sink and cupboard are so close usually only one person uses the “kitchen” at a time.
Okay, now that’s cleared up. So our first full day at Byron I went second hand surfboard hunting. Regular shopping tires me out fairly quick, but this I could stand for longer. I mean, all these people who don’t have what size and style you need always make you hang around and check out this board and that board, blah, blah, blah. We found two I liked: A 6’3 trifin fishboard, or a 6’0 tri/four fin fishboard. The guy at the place with the second one was really nice and he let me borrow it for the day to see if it worked. I spent the day mostly paddling, and even though the guy said to just paddle on it to see if that was good, I didn’t mean to; I got stuck in the stupid current (not a rip, thank goodness) and just paddled and paddled and stayed in one place until I just let it carry me over to the sandy bottom (after 10 minutes of paddling), and I was pretty tired from that, but I went back in to the surf anyways to have fun. I ended up buying it and going surfing for the rest of the days after an hour of schoolwork each day.
We stayed at Byron Bay campsite which is really close to everything.. the town, the beach, the pub, the 50m swimming pool (right across the fence). I went surfing every day for 8 days except for one day when a Hurricane came through.
One day early in the a.m. my mom woke us up because our neighbour had just arrived on the early train. The rest of that day, we taught her how to boogy board and surf (sort of). We and a lot of fun with her, and even went to cold rock after dinner ( An Aussie ice cream place where they smash whatever you want in to your ice cream).
We went to a market one of the days we were there and found the best doughnut place in the whole world (Byron Bay Organic doughnuts) made fresh in front of you. They are huge and warm, and sugary, and I could have eaten a million!
